Sub of the Month

To Julia Feild, the best part of substitute teaching is making a difference in the lives of children.

“I pray that each day I can reach out to at least one student that might be able to have his or her ‘light bulb’ turn on once they understand a concept or new idea,” Julia said.

Julia began teaching after earning her degree from Southwest Baptist University. As the wife of a military member, Julia has taught all over the country, including in Colorado, Texas, and Oklahoma.

After a break from teaching, Julia became a substitute teacher so she could get reacclimated to the classroom.

“We are now stationed back at Fort Leavenworth, KS, and the flexibility of subbing sounded like a good place to start working with students again,” she said.

Besides enjoying the rewarding task of educating students and the flexibility substitute teaching offers, Julia likes that she is nearby in case her children need her.

“My husband, Patrick, and I have three children at two different schools. Being a substitute teacher enables me to be on their schedules and be close by if needed for an illness, etc.,” she said.

Julia’s favorite grades to teach are upper elementary or high school, but she enjoys music and PE at the elementary level because she gets to teach all grades.

When she is teaching, Julia tries to be as helpful as she can, but isn’t afraid to admit when she doesn’t know the answer.

“If I don’t know the answer, I show them that I’m not afraid to research it or ask someone,” she said.

In her free time, Julia enjoys scrapbooking, card making, and counted cross stitch.

Julia was chosen as our Sub of the Month because she is very flexible. She will work at any school and, many times, has been asked to change classrooms at the last minute and is always happy to do what is best for the school and the students. Julia also gets great feedback from all the teachers and secretaries.

Thanks Julia for being a great substitute! We are fortunate to have you on our team.
